Jazz sous les Pommiers ("Jazz under the apple trees") is an annual week-long jazz festival held in Coutances, in the Manche department of Normandy. It was founded in 1982 by two local jazz enthusiasts, Thierry Giard, a teacher, and Gérard Houssin, a cultural activity leader. The festival traditionally takes place during the Feast of the Ascension in May.
Over the years, the festival has presented an incredibly eclectic program, ranging from "New Orleans–style" jazz to electronic music, and embracing street performances and more experimental sounds. It features both renowned international artists and talented local musicians.
By 2006, the festival had hosted over 1,000 concerts with hundreds of thousands of attendees, and in 2010, it reached a record 37,000 spectators. The 30th edition in 2011 culminated in a festive “Folle Parade” — a 2.5-hour “Crazy Parade” marching through the town center of Coutances.
Now in its 44th year, Jazz sous les Pommiers is recognized as one of the largest jazz festivals in France, celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere, strong local involvement, and diverse musical offering. It thrives on the dedication of a close-knit organizing team, over 500 volunteers, and a community that truly lives and breathes the festival — all enveloped in a friendly, accessible, and ecologically conscious spirit.
